STATEMENT BY THE SREBRENICA MEMORIAL CENTER
The Srebrenica Memorial Center informs the public that on Saturday, 17 January, an incident of a provocative nature occurred in front of the Memorial Center in Potočari, when an individual from the Republic of Serbia, Brane Stanivuković from Sremska Mitrovica, identified as a member of the Chetnik movement, stopped at the entrance to the Memorial Center and caused disturbance.
According to the information available to us, the individual stopped directly at the entrance to the Memorial Center, wearing a šajkača cap with a kokarda emblem, and took photographs at that location. After employees of the Memorial Center, who noticed this behavior, warned him that such provocations were not permitted, the individual began verbally insulting them, shouting that the area was “Serbian land.”
Following the verbal confrontation, employees of the Memorial Center, in accordance with established procedures, notified the Directorate for Coordination of Police Bodies of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and shortly thereafter a patrol from the Srebrenica Police Station arrived at the scene and took over further actions.
The individual was subsequently removed from the area in front of the Memorial Center, and according to available information, left the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina the following day.
The Srebrenica Memorial Center emphasizes that it does not have jurisdiction over security matters, either within the Memorial Center or in its immediate surroundings. Security of the Memorial Center is the responsibility of the Directorate for Coordination of Police Bodies of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which provides security for the memorial complex.
The Srebrenica Memorial Center strongly condemns any form of provocation, hate speech, and actions that undermine the dignity of the victims of genocide, and remains firmly committed to preserving a culture of remembrance, respect, and peace, in cooperation with the competent institutions, in order to protect the dignity of this site and all those who visit it.
