Vshanui organises daily commemorative activities honouring civilian and military victims of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The organisation dedicated one day to raising awareness of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the genocide against Bosniaks in Srebrenica.
The Ukrainian organisation Vshanui (Вшануй), one of the country's leading initiatives dedicated to developing a culture of remembrance and commemorating those killed during Russia's aggression against Ukraine, devoted a day of its social media activities to remembering the Srebrenica genocide and Bosnia and Herzegovina's experience in preserving the memory of war victims.
Through a special educational programme presented on the organisation's official communication channels, Ukrainian audiences were introduced to the historical context of the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the genocide against Bosniaks in Srebrenica, the experiences of victims' families, and the development of a culture of remembrance in the post-war period. Particular attention was given to the Srebrenica Flower and the art installation Što te nema (Why Are You Not Here?), as examples of how art and civic initiatives help preserve the memory of those killed.
The programme was inspired by a meeting between representatives of Vshanui and a delegation from the Srebrenica Memorial, held in Kyiv in September during the observance of the national minute of silence at Independence Square (Maidan). Discussions focused on Bosnia and Herzegovina's experiences, the challenges of memorialisation, work with victims' families, and the role of institutions in preserving historical facts.
Vshanui is one of Ukraine's most recognised initiatives dedicated to developing contemporary commemorative practices. The organisation carries forward the work and ideas of Ukrainian journalist, activist and combat medic Iryna “Cheka” Tsybukh, who was killed in May 2024 while serving on the front line. Among those who have continued to develop the initiative is Kateryna Datsenko.
The organisation is particularly known for promoting the daily national minute of silence at 9 a.m., during which people across Ukraine honour civilians and members of the country's defence forces killed during Russia's aggression. Through cooperation with local communities, educational establishments and public institutions, Vshanui works to make remembrance of the victims an integral part of everyday life.
The presentation of the Srebrenica genocide forms part of growing cooperation between Ukrainian organisations and the Srebrenica Memorial. During the September visit to Ukraine, a representative of the Memorial held a series of meetings with Ukrainian institutions, museums and human rights organisations to exchange experiences in documenting war crimes, memorialisation and education.
Bosnia and Herzegovina's experience is particularly relevant to Ukraine in the context of the future recovery of liberated territories, the identification of missing persons, the protection of victims' families' rights, and efforts to counter historical revisionism.
The posts are available on Vshanui's official Instagram account, @moment_of_honor, where a series of educational materials presents the experiences of Srebrenica and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
