Srebrenica Memorial Management Board establishes SrebrenicaDocs

Following the second edition of the SrebrenicaDocs festival, the Management Board of the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Centre, Memorial Site and Cemetery for the Victims of the 1995 Genocide has adopted the Rulebook on the Award for Contribution to Documentary Film on the Genocide in Srebrenica.

"This confirms that SrebrenicaDocs, as an ongoing event made possible in its first two years through the support of the United Kingdom Government, will now become part of the permanent institutional calendar of the Memorial Centre. We have shown that there is genuine interest in research and documentary film, and that the Memorial Centre can serve as a space for discussion on new approaches to documentary filmmaking on the subject of genocide, as well as broader themes of dealing with the past and transitional justice. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Šefika Đozić and Mirnes Zahirović, who worked on developing the Rulebook, and the Management Board for adopting this initiative," said Mirela Osmanović, project coordinator.

The award will be presented to filmmakers, directors, producers and other film professionals whose long-term work in documenting the genocide in Srebrenica and preserving the culture of remembrance meets the criteria set out in the Rulebook. Eligible nominators include film institutions and organisations, foundations and associations of film professionals, memorial centres, academic institutions, and credible individuals from the fields of film criticism, history and journalism. The award will be presented for the first time in 2027.

"Over two editions of SrebrenicaDocs, we have built a foundation and mapped the people who are interested in developing this process further. It was important to us not to rush, and to create a framework backed by a transparent process," Osmanović concluded.
